SOSWENSA Conducts Community Awareness Campaign on Autumn Rainfall Risks in Baidoa

Baidoa, Southwest State of Somalia – The Southwest Somalia Civil Society Network (SOSWENSA), led by its Chairperson, Mr. Mohamed Abukar Ali, has conducted a community awareness campaign in selected neighbourhoods and internally displaced persons (IDP) camps on the outskirts of Baidoa. The campaign focused on preventing and reducing risks associated with the autumn rainy season, particularly flooding and flash floods.

The initiative aimed to strengthen community awareness of weather-related hazards, promote preventive measures, and encourage preparedness to protect lives, property, and livelihoods. Particular attention was given to communities living in flood-prone areas, where seasonal rainfall can increase the risk of displacement, property damage, and other humanitarian challenges.

During the awareness campaign, community members received practical guidance on flood risk prevention, personal safety, and emergency preparedness. The awareness activities also highlighted the importance of avoiding high-risk areas, keeping drainage channels clear, protecting children and other vulnerable individuals, and responding promptly to weather warnings and emergency instructions issued by relevant authorities.

Training and Equipment to Strengthen Emergency Preparedness

The team implementing the awareness activities had previously received training and preparatory support from the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP). The team was also provided with essential emergency response equipment to strengthen its capacity to support community awareness, preparedness, and emergency response efforts.

This training and equipment are intended to enhance the team’s knowledge and practical skills in promoting disaster preparedness and helping communities understand how to reduce their exposure to weather-related hazards.
