SOSWENSA and Southwest State Officials Visit Rain-Affected IDP Camps in Baidoa

Baidoa, Somalia | 20 October 2026

The Chairperson of the Southwest Somalia Non-State Actors Network (SOSWENSA), Mr. Mohamed Abukar Ali, the Adviser to the Southwest State Leadership on Internal Displacement Affairs, Ms. Luuley Maadkeer Farey, and the Chairperson of the Baidoa District Women’s Association conducted a field visit to several internally displaced persons (IDP) camps on the outskirts of Baidoa affected by recent rainfall.

Assessing the Situation of Displaced Communities

The visit aimed to directly assess the living conditions of displaced families, identify the impact of the recent rains on their shelters and essential household belongings, and determine their most urgent humanitarian needs.

During the visit, the delegation observed the conditions facing affected households, with particular attention to the challenges experienced by vulnerable communities and the need for timely humanitarian assistance and practical support.

Heavy rainfall poses additional risks to families living in shelters that are not adequately equipped to withstand severe weather conditions. This highlights the urgent need for effective humanitarian assistance and sustainable solutions to strengthen the safety and resilience of displaced communities.

Call for Coordinated Humanitarian Response

SOSWENSA emphasizes the importance of strengthening cooperation and coordination among the Southwest State Government, humanitarian organizations, civil society organizations, and other relevant stakeholders to address the urgent needs of rain-affected families.

The Network also calls for particular attention to vulnerable households and encourages stronger efforts in emergency response, disaster risk reduction, flood preparedness, and the development of sustainable solutions to support internally displaced persons.

SOSWENSA remains committed to strengthening the role of civil society in community service, advocating for vulnerable populations, and supporting efforts to reduce the impact of natural disasters across Southwest State of Somalia.
